Acting Minister of Health Mamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane says non-compliance of COVID-19 protocols by the public is increasing pressure on the health system, especially hospitals.
She says an intervention team will be sent to Gauteng to help with the rising COVID-19 numbers in the province.

Addressing the media during a vaccination site visit at the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Academic hospital in Soweto, she said many people are not observing the COVID-19 protocols.
“When you look at the past three days you would see that the numbers are reflected on Gauteng are a worry and there are areas in Johannesburg where we need to make serious intervention.
We will be able to send an intervention team into Gauteng that will assist us with the human capital to support the province managing the pandemic. We are paying attention to the capacity of the province in terms of hospital beds.”
Meanwhile South Africa has recorded a further 9 320 COVID-19 infections in the last 24-hour cycle. This brings the accumulative number of cases to 1739 425.
The latest figures bring the number of infections for the past four days to 35 371.
Growing calls for more vaccination sites in Gauteng:
One hundred and fourteen COVID-19-related deaths have also been recorded, taking the national toll to 57 706.
Gauteng has recorded well over 50% of the new infections with 5 902.
