Nominations for ANC leadership officially open

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Nominations for ANC leadership positions to be contested at its elective congress in Mangaung in December have now been declared open. The national executive committee of the ruling party met yesterday to open nominations and finalise the auditing of branches which will send delegates to Mangaung. ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe says the deadline for nominations is 26 November. The ANC membership stands at 1.2 million and has 3 687 branches in good standing. About 631 branches have been disqualified and the appeal process for such branches has now been closed. The allocation of delegates to qualifying branches will be done later. Mantashe admitted that ANC membership in KZN grew by close to 90 000 members since January this year while the Eastern Cape membership shrunk by almost 40 000 members in the same period. Meanwhile, Western Cape Local Government Minister Anton Bredell says he has not yet received a recommendation from the City of Cape Town to fire ANC councillor Andile Lili for alleged misconduct. The DA led council has voted for the dismissal of Lili after the City’s disciplinary committee found him to have contravened the councillors code of conduct. Bredell says he has to follow a legal process before making any decision. “They must send the recommendation to me. My process would be – I would give the councillor 21 days to react on evidence provided to me by the city and after that I will seek legal advise, then a formal process,” says Bredell.
