No woman’s land

Reading Time: < 1 minute

15 March, 2012Produced by Asanda Magaqa and Godknows NareA week before the commemoration of Human Rights Day, this week’s Special Assignment re-broadcasts a programme that brought us the experiences of Zimbabwean women as they try to come to South Africa in search for greener pastures. The viewer is taken into the dangerous zone dubbed ‘no man’s land’ between the borders of Zimbabwe and South Africa. It is here where border gangs known as “guma-gumas” operate with blatant impunity, raping women and children.
Our investigator infiltrates the gangs to see how these criminals stalk their prey. All of these women’s dreams of a better life are shattered before they even reach the Promised Land as they are gang raped and often find themselves pregnant or HIV positive after the rapes. This programme also won the TV feature Vodacom Journalist of year award for 2011.For more information:Special Assignment office: 011 714 6757/6758Acting Executive Producer: Busisiwe Ntuli-083 346 7291Co-ordinator: Menatalie Van Rooyen – 083 241 7670
