NMU students blockade entrances over tuition fees

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Protesting students at the Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha are blockading entrances to its north and south campuses.

The protest seems to be related to tuition fees and funding.

The university’s spokesperson, Zandile Mbabela, says there is also protest action on its George Campus.

“We are monitoring the situation on the ground. Staff and students are advised to liaise with their line managers and lecturers, respectively, on how best to proceed with the day’s operations and academic activities. We have also asked staff and students to keep an eye out on the university’s official communication platforms where more information will be shared.”

Meanwhile, last month, protest action flared up at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville campus in Durban.

It is alleged that about 30 people blocked the main entrance to the university with burning tyres and debris.

A university guardhouse and a security vehicle were damaged in a violent demonstration when a group of about 50 students tried to force their way onto the same campus.
