NMB Metro considers introducing water tariffs

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Metro might be forced to increase the water tariffs to control the high volume of water usage if the water situation deteriorates.

Executive Mayor Athol Trollip, along with municipality officials and various religious leaders, visited one of the Churchill supply dams outside Humansdorp to pray for rain.

“The Metro’s dams have hit an all-time low just above 24-percent when combined. Residents are urged to use 50 litres of water per day. We are currently at level C water restrictions where the tariffs are very high and if we don’t get rain which I believe we will get. But if we don’t get rain soon we will have to re-look at those tariffs because that is ultimately after appealing to the people to use water sparingly but if they don’t use water sparingly the best way to control water is to make it more expensive. Then you are forced to save, but that’s the last resort.”
