Ninth suspect in Bester case to appear before Bloemfontein court

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The ninth suspect arrested in connection with the Thabo Bester escape saga is expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s court on Tuesday.

The suspect, who will face a charge of assisting an inmate to escape from lawful custody, is likely to face more charges as the investigation continues.

He was arrested on Sunday in Johannesburg and is linked with the convicted rapist and murderer’s escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre in May last year.

Bester faked his death and used Katleho Bereng’s body as a decoy.

So far two accused, Zolile Sekeleni and Natassja Jansen are out on bail, while four other accused were denied bail.

Dr Nandipha Magudumana abandoned her bail application to pursue an application to nullify her arrest in Tanzania.

That application is headed for the Supreme Court of Appeal after the Free State high court turned it down.

Bester and Magudumana remain in custody and are expected back in the magistrate court with all other accused on June 20.

Police are not ruling out the possibility of more arrests on the matter.
