Nine killed and one wounded in cash in transit heist: KZN

Two police officers have died and another was seriously wounded in a shoot-out in KwaZulu Natal that also left seven alleged cash-in-transit robbers dead.

According to the police a SAPS Special Task Force received intelligence alerting them that the heist would take place.

Police spokesperson Vish Naidoo says the task team was prepared and intercepted the group of heavily armed suspects when they attacked the security vehicle along Hlabisa road and used explosives to access the cash.

Naidoo says, “Two of our police officers were killed and seven suspects were also killed. One member was wounded during an attempted cash in transit heist. Our members were responding to intelligence that there was going to be a cash in transit vehicle robbed on Hlabisa road in kwaNongoma. Seven suspects were shot and killed. A member from Special Task Force and a member from crime intelligence were killed. And one member was wounded in the leg. She is currently in hospital receiving treatment.”

A BMW which is believed to have been used in multiple robberies in the area and four AK47 were recovered.

The names of the police officers have not yet been released.
