An inauguration ceremony presided by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was held on Thursday at the Rigasa Station in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna to commission 10 Chinese-built train carriages and two locomotives for the Abuja-Kaduna railway service.

President Buhari also boarded the train with the company of other Nigerian officials for its trial run following the inauguration ceremony.

As the first section of Nigeria’s modernized railway network, the Kaduna-Abuja railway was built by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and put into use in July, 2016.

The railway so far has operated more than 500 days with the assistance of Chinese technicians, transporting more than 50 000 commuters in total.
