Some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Cape Town have joined hands with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in a voter education drive ahead of the upcoming elections next week.

The Back2Basic Foundation says it has developed various projects regarding voter education. This as part of its mandate to uplift and empower communities about their constitutional entrenched right to exercise their vote.

Founder and board member Nathi Mjenxane told SABC News that the organisation is working with different community stakeholders in driving voter education, including the IEC.

“Fortunately for us the statistics data is easily available. The IEC has been very supportive. We approached the IEC and they gave us information. They also subsequently gave us the certificate and credited us as voter educators to prepare communities for these coming elections. So that is the background of the organisation, who we are and what we have been doing up to this project that we are doing now for the upcoming elections on voter education to try and empower the communities. Firstly to appreciate their rights to vote and also how they can use their rights to vote to bring about the change that they want in their respective communities,” says Mjenxane.
