NFP wants death penalty re-introduced

The National Freedom Party (NFP) in KwaZulu-Natal wants the death penalty re-introduced. The party says it’s the only way to stop political killings.

Its provincial chairperson testified at the Moerane commission probing political killings in the province.

The NFP in KwaZulu-Natal says all attempts to stop political killings have failed. It’s determined to lobby for a national referendum to bring back the death penalty.

The NFP says the on-going political murders are fuelled by greed and control of resources.

The party warned that the fight for municipal resources could escalate.

KwaZulu-Natal NFP Chairperson Victor Mlotshwa says: “We believe as the NFP that if the death sentence comes back, then it will make people think twice before taking a gun to go and kill another people and they have this mind-set that if they kill they will go to prison and eat nice food.”

Some of the commissioners criticised Mlotshwa’s suggestion, saying research has shown that the death penalty does not reduce violence but rather worsens it.

The commission is now in recess and will resume on the 25th of January.
