Newly-formed Lekwa Community Forum in Standerton, Mpumalanga, is aiming to dislodge the African National Congress (ANC) from power in the Lekwa Local Municipality.

The Lekwa Community Forum won six of 30 seats in the council. The ANC failed to get outright majority, winning 13 seats.

The election outcome means that the council is now hung and a coalition government is in store.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) won four seats, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Freedom Front Plus won three seats each and the African Transformation Movement (ATM) one.

Leader of the Lekwa Community Forum, Delani Thabethe says they are willing to form a coalition with all other parties, but the ANC.

“The other thing that the community said during the campaign is that they would not want us to work with the ANC. The fact that they decided to vote for the community organisation against the ANC is an indication that their trust lies with this community structure and not with the ANC,” says Thabethe.
