New Prasa board promises to resolve issues of mismanagement

Newly-appointed board of Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has promised Parliament that it will move fast to resolve issues of mismanagement and state capture.

In a report released in 2015 by the Public Protector entitled “Derailed”, she discovered a plethora of shenanigans related to locomotives from Spain.

As if the Public Protector’s report was not enough, the Auditor General discovered irregular expenditure totalling over half a billion rands, and the fruitless and wasteful expenditure totalling R19 million.

The law firm was ordered to investigate findings emanating from the Public Protector’s report, at a staggering amount of R150 million.

The Treasury is of the view that the amount was extremely exorbitant.

Prasa promised it would leave no stone unturned to bring these and other issues to light.

“We do not want to work on speculation. We also read newspapers, and we are members of the community. We want to have hard facts,” says Chairperson of Prasa board, Advocate Tintswalo Makhubele.

However, legislators argue that while the board is still fiddling, the service of rail transport across the country is deteriorating.

The Johannesburg and Cape Chambers of Commerce have also raised serious concerns about the deteriorating service offered by Metro Rail.

Most workers get to work late, resulting in billions of rands lost.
