The two-day event starts on Saturday and will feature about 6 000 athletes from all over the world.

The newly-elected Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Mongameli Bobani has assured the public that political upheaval in the metro will not disrupt the Ironman World Championships this weekend.

The two-day event starts on Saturday and will feature about 6 000 athletes from all over the world.

Bobani was elected mayor on Monday after a hotly-disputed motion of no confidence was passed in Athol Trollip.

He says his committee is fully behind the event.

“Ironman is going ahead as planned there will be no disruptions. I want to tell the international visitors they are welcome in the city. This is the best city as you know you are welcome; come and enjoy. We welcome you.  We can ensure you that there will be no disruptions, everything is going ahead as planned”.
