Reading Time: < 1 minute

The African Union (AU) Chairperson for 2017 will be announced on Monday.

The rotational one-year post is currently held by Chad under the leadership of President Idris Derby.

A number of high profile leaders are also expected to address AU heads of state and government in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

Amongst those scheduled to address the Assembly is the newly elected Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Manuel De Oliveira Guterres, who will be engaging the continent’s leaders under one roof for the first time.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as well as Cuban leader Raul Castro will also address the gathering.

While a decision of appointing the new AU chair is generally smooth, the crucial process of electing the AU Commission takes place later this evening.

Member states of the five candidates who are vying for the commission chairperson ship have been engaged in intense lobbying.
