Reading Time: < 1 minute

An exhibition depicting the life of Nelson Mandela has been launched at the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha.

The exhibition of wax figures documents the life of the late statesman from birth to death.

The exhibition also aims to introduce young artists to this artform.

Wax statue specialist, Lungelo Gumede is the artist behind the 30 wax statues.

It took Gumede two years to complete the statues of utat’Mandela as he has not been seen before.

Some of the highlights include depictions of his time as a lawyer, his time on Robben Island and when he cast his vote in 1994.

Artist, Lungelo Gumede, says: “This is where Mandela was born and started his journey and laid to rest so it’s a perfect spot for me to host this exhibition. It tells a story of him when he was young…so I decided to bring it here in his home.”

Next month, the world will again celebrate Mandela Day when the world observes what would have been Madiba’s 103rd birthday on July 18.

The exhibition will be open until the end of July.
