Nelson Mandela Metro dismisses claims of Listeriosis

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has condemned allegations that its tap water poses a risk of the Listeriosis bacteria. It has advised citizens to ignore the rumours.

This as messages quickly spread through social media, alleging that the water was unsafe for drinking and citizens should purchase water instead.

Mayoral committee member for infrastructure and engineering Masixole Zinto says the false information has not only caused panic across the metro but has also led to undue pressure on the service delivery call centre.

He says the NMB drinking water preparation and distribution complies with the South African National Standards.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape Health Department has urged all those who experience symptoms of Listeriosis which include severe headache and an unusual flu to seek urgent medical help.

Provincial Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo says a total of 26 Listeriosis cases have been reported in the province.

He says six of them, including one death, were reported in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.
