Nelson Mandela Challenge

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The first edition of the event was held in 1994; the year South Africa held the country’s first non-racial elections and Mandela was elected as the country’s first democratically chosen leader. The competition was held in celebration of the historic achievement and it was called the Nelson Mandela Inauguration Challenge Cup; South Africa played against Zambia. South Africa won 2-1. The 2001 edition had to be cancelled at the last minute, after Mexico withdrew.
