Nelson Mandela Bay ready to host ninth edition of the Cosafa Women’s Championship

The Nelson Mandela Bay is ready for the ninth edition of the Cosafa Women’s Championship, this time at the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The tournament will be held in Gqeberha from the 28th of September to the 9th of October.

Crowd-favourites Banyana Banyana are back to fight for their unprecedented fifth title in a row.

Nelson Mandela Bay MMC for Sport Helga van Staden says that the city is ready to host their second Cosafa Championship for the year.

“We are excited to know that Cosafa has chosen the city to host this championships again. It shows that they have confidence in the city and they have confidence in the government as they host this African cup in our city.”

Last week, Banyana Banyana became the champions of the inaugural Aisha Buhari Invitational tournament at Lagos in Nigeria. This, when South Africa lifted the trophy after beating the hosts and number one ranked team in Africa Nigeria 4-2, in the eleventh meeting between the two nations at senior level. The last meeting between Nigeria and South Africa had been in December 2018 in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations.

But Banyana Banyana took the lead in the 5th minute with an own goal by Nigerian defender Chidi Michelle Alozie.

The visitors won a penalty in the 17th minute after a hand ball in the danger area.

Linda Motlhalo stepped up to make it 2-nil.

Gabriela Salgado scored on the stroke of half-time to make it 3-nil.

Nigeria started the second half brightly with substitute Vivian Ikechukwu scoring a brace. But Mamello Makhabane scored another penalty to make it 4-2 late in the second half.
