Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is expected to hold a council meeting on Wednesday to discuss issues pertaining to its budget.

The meeting comes briefly after President Cyril Ramaphosa authorised a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate serious irregularities in several municipality and government departments.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is expected to touch on the pending investigations by the SIU into this municipality for alleged corruption and fraud.

The SIU will investigate procurement of goods and/or services in a manner that was not fair, competitive, transparent, equitable or cost-effective; improper conduct by officials; and unlawful appropriation of public money.

Executive Mayor Athol Trollip has welcomed the announcement, saying the R8.8-billion of irregular expenditure must be the focus of the investigation.

He says the money was spent by previous administrations who failed to preserve relevant documentation.
