Neck and neck presidential race may jeopardise ANC unity

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The next President of the ANC must win with a wide margin if unity is to be restored within the party. The ANC Presidential race is expected to be close.

Commentators have warned the neck and neck race between Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa may jeopardise the unity of the party going forward.

This is according to political analyst, Aubrey Matshiqi, who was speaking about the concerns that this weekend’s elective conference may lead to further divisions within the party.

He says the problem is that the race seems to be too close. “I say too close because if the ANC is going to unite beyond this conference the winning candidate must win by a wide margin with a strong mandate. And if the race is too close the winning candidate will not be able to preside over the ANC in its entirety.”

“He or she will be rejected by the losing portion of the ANC,” says Matshiqi.
