DA to lay charges over Mandela funeral funds misuse

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it will lay charges against the Eastern Cape Director-General Marion Mbina-Mthembu, rising from the Public Protector’s report on former president Nelson Mandela’s funeral – released during the past week.

The Public Protector found that about R300-million meant for the funeral had been misspent by various Eastern Cape agencies and others.

The DA says Mbina-Mthembu authorised the transfer of funds to corrupt entities and individuals during her time as Provincial Treasury Head.

It says the charges will be laid in terms of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.
