The Political Party Funding Bill, which would prohibit parties from accepting funds from foreign governments and donors, is a step closer to becoming law. The Bill passed through the NCOP by an overwhelming margin on Thursday, after being adopted by the National Assembly two months ago.

It also seeks to regulate private funding of political parties. It will now be sent to the President to sign into law.

NCOP Chairperson Thandi Modise announced the result of the vote.

“Honourable members, 41 members have voted in favour – one member has voted against. We have no abstentions. Honourable members, because the majority of the members have voted in favour of the Bill, I declare that the Bill has been agreed to in terms of Section 75 of the Constitution.”
