One month after demonstrations against undocumented migrants across South Africa, the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) says the country’s security situation has stabilised.
It says the protest action has declined significantly and only isolated demonstrations continue in some areas.
Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili says authorities remain on high alert.
“The country remains stable. Law enforcement continues to prevail. Our intelligence community continues to observe and we will respond accordingly. Although protest activity has declined, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal continue to experience isolated and localised demonstrations. The majority of these protests have remained peaceful and within the confines of the law.”
Mosikili says more than 77 000 undocumented immigrants have since been repatriated following the nationwide anti-immigrant marches.
Almost 20 000 others have been deported.
“We have begun demobilising the repatriation Centre in Musina following the successful processing and repatriation of thousands of undocumented foreign nationals. Just over 500 individuals remain at the centre and will be repatriated to their respective countries in the coming days.”
Government says multi-disciplinary operations will continue to safeguard the county’s security and enforce immigration laws.
