Government has extended the national state of disaster by a further month.

The extension was gazetted today almost a year after the state of disaster was initially introduced on 15 March last year in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, the Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs says the extension to the 15th of next month follows consultations and approval from Cabinet.

The department says the move is aimed at saving lives and preserving livelihoods.

South Africa currently has 1 524 174 COVID-19 cases and 51 015 deaths.

At the beginning of this month, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the relaxation of lockdown regulations to Alert Level 1 after the number of COVID-19 cases started to decrease following the country’s second surge.

However, scientists have warned that a third wave is expected from the end of next month into the winter months.
