President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the recipients of different National Orders as champions of peace who overcame their fears in service of others.

He was speaking at the ceremony to honour esteemed South Africans and eminent foreign nationals at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guesthouse in Pretoria on Thursday morning.

The National Orders are the highest award that a country through its President bestows on people who have contributed in different forms for the liberation of South Africa.

They are the Order of Ikhamanga, the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo, the Order of Luthuli and the Order of the Baoba among others.

Ramaphosa says, “While we acknowledge that the pandemic is still very much with us, we also recognise the important duty that we have as a nation to honour amongst us who have made outstanding contributions towards the betterment of our country, as well as the human condition.”

“Through these national orders we recognise many outstanding individuals who in many ways defied odds and made immense sacrifices, not only for us to attain our freedom but so that, that freedom becomes meaningful,” he adds.
