National Coronavirus Command Council expected to meet on Sunday

The National Coronavirus Command Council will meet on Sunday to assess developments related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s national response. The Council’s deliberations come towards the end of a two-week period during which the country has implemented Alert Level 4 of the coronavirus national state of disaster.

The Council meeting will be followed by meetings of the President’s Co-ordinating Council and Cabinet. These engagements take place as infections continue to rise in Gauteng which is the epicentre of the virus so far.

Over 22 thousand cases last reported

South Africa has recorded 22 443new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 2 157 687.

Gauteng continues to report a large chunk of the cases, having recorded 11680 infections overnight.

The country has also recorded 374 new COVID-19 related fatalities, pushing the death toll to 63 873.

An increase of 869 hospital admissions has also been reported, with recoveries now standing at 1 884 170.
