National Assembly to elect new speaker this week

The National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will both hold plenaries this week, for the first time after the winter recess. There are 43 committee meetings scheduled to sit.

However, the most prominent event will be the election of the speaker later in the week.

The ANC has indicated that it will nominate former Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiwe Mapisa-Nqakula to succeed Thandi Modise.

Modise is now the new Defence Minister.

Meanwhile, the National Treasury and  South African Revenue Service (Sars) will also brief the Standing Committee on Finance on tax-related legislation.

NCOP committees dealing with the economy and trade will receive a briefing focusing on resetting the economy to boost Economic Growth, Attract Investments and Create Jobs in regional and local economies.

On Wednesday, the Department of Public Enterprises will update the oversight committee on progress in addressing governance and financial challenges of state-owned companies which include among others recent explosion at Medupi, liquidation of Denel.
