The memorial service for Namibian freedom fighter and struggle icon Herman Andimba Toivo ya Toivo will be held in the country’s capital, Windhoek on Monday.

The 93-year-old former Robben Island prisoner died in Windhoek on Friday. Toivo was a co-founder of the South West African People’s Organisation( Swapo), which is still the governing party in Namibia.

He was one of 36 Namibians to be arrested by South African apartheid security forces on terrorism charges in 1966 and spent 16 years in Robben Island.

After Namibia’s independence in 1990, he became a cabinet minister in the Swapo government.
