Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s springtime in Namaqualand. The world-famous Namaqualand daisies are in full bloom. Tourists from afar are descending on the region to bear witness to the picturesque scenery.

The dusty and desert region has a carpet of lovely daisies. The pretty flowers can also be used for medicinal purposes.

“We have the cancer bush it is also very good for COVID,” says Ida Salona.

The region has seen an increase in flights. Tourists from afar are flocking in.

Springbok airport manager, Morné Coetzee says more flights are coming in for flower season.

“Normally we’ve got about 30 to 40 flights per month may be coming in that is tourists, private businessman, corporate groups visiting their retail outlets so in this time we have got about eight aeroplanes coming in especially for flower season,” says Ida Salona.

After the violence and looting that erupted in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng in July – these tourists from Durban want to experience peace, tranquillity, and beautiful scenery.

Lauren Blizard says they are excited about the flowers.

“We’re very excited to see the flowers. When we flew in today we started seeing the purple and yellow and we started getting very excited,” Blizard.

“I think it’s not only the flowers, but it’s also beautiful scenery. We’ve just flown over the most stunning desert area, lovely rock formations and hoping to get some good flowers but otherwise just to meet some of the people and really experience this part of the world,” says Dickson.

The tourism industry has sustained huge losses over the last year – as the full effect of various lockdowns and travel restrictions are being felt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And a good flower season can financially set businesses up for months. Even though the Namaqualand transforms into a colour explosion – following heavy winter rains – the Namaqua daisies are certainly a picture to behold.
