Nakedi Mathews Phosa

Nakedi Mathews Phosa, an attorney, unsuccessfully ran for the post of African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President in 2012. Cyril Ramaphosa received 3,018 votes and was elected deputy president of the ANC, convincingly defeating Mathews Phosa, who received 470 votes and Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale, who received 463.

Born on 1 September 1952, in Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, Mathews is the former premier of Mpumalanga and ANC Treasurer-General as well as a former member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC.

He studied at the University of the North and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws at Boston University.

Mathews published a volume of poetry called Deur die oog van ‘n naald (Through the eye of a needle) in 1996 and speaks nine languages.

On April 29th 2017, Phosa announced that he had accepted a nomination for the ANC Presidency and would be a candidate at the 54th ANC conference in December.

On June 11th 2017, Phosa officially announced his intention to seek the Presidential nomination in December 2017.

In July, 30, 217 Phosa while addressing the Methodist Church of Southern Africa in Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape says he is ready to restore the dignity of the ANC if he is elected as party head at the December Elective Congress.

Phosa currently holds chairman, vice-chairman or board member positions at more than 10 prominent South African institutions and companies, including the University of South Africa, Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut, Special Olympics South Africa, Value Logistics, EOH (Pty) Ltd, SA Golden Leaf and Hans Merensky Holdings.

Controversies

In 2001, Cyril Ramaphosa, Tokyo Sexwale and Phosa were investigated in connection with an alleged plot to oust Mbeki. They were cleared.

In May ANC Presidential hopeful Phosa told the SABC that should he be elected as ANC president in December, one of his tasks would be to rally the National executive Committee (NEC) to recall President Jacob Zuma from the highest office in the land.

Supporters

In June Student’s organization Sasco in the Bathandwa Ndondo Branch came in their numbers in support of Phosa as ANC candidate for president.

Chairperson Khanya Kenqa says although they do not vote in ANC conferences, they have a preference when it comes to leadership selection.

In April Phosa accepted an endorsement to be the next ANC President.

and several other wards in the Western Cape say Phosa is one of few ANC members who still has integrity.

Phosa says those who are stealing from the people must be prosecuted and taken to jail. He was speaking in Khayelitsha where seven ANC branches endorsed him to be the next president.

In June 16, 2017 ANC PEC member in the Western Cape, Andile Lili is calling on young people to rally behind party veteran Phosa, as the party’s president. Lili is in fact the convener of the Phosa presidential campaign.

Phosa received a resounding welcome at the Sekakene community hall in Botlokwa, Limpopo as he accepted nomination to be the party’s next president by the ANC Molemole sub-region.

Mzwake Mbuli has thrown his weight behind Phosa.
