N. West SACP gunning for Mahumapelo

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The ANC alliance partners in the North West have called on the ruling party’s national executive committee leadership to intervene and recall premier Supra Mahumapelo, before Tuesday’s debate on a motion of no confidence against him.

There are concerns that some ANC members of the provincial legislature might connive with opposition parties and vote in support of the motion.

The motion of no confidence against Mahumapelo has been brought by the EFF.

SACP provincial secretary, Madoda Sambatha, says although they are calling for the recall of Mahumapelo by the ANC, they are not in support of the opposition’s motion.

“Comrade Supra Mahumapelo is responsible for a collapse in government. The provincial government is collapsing on daily basis. What we are seeing in the provincial government is corruption that is tantamount to siphoning government money out to private providers. We are for section 100 for North West and we are for a formal recall of the ANC premier by the ANC and not by the opposition.”

The Speaker, Suzan Dantjie, on Friday rejected a request for voting on the motion to be done by secret ballot. EFF deputy president, Floyd Shivambo says they will challenge her ruling in court.

“You must not allow that. You must vote openly. Let us demand a secret ballot, because we know for sure that more than half of the ANC caucus in the legislature of the North West is ready to vote Supra out. So, we must go to court to demand that. We want a secret ballot because we know that there’s such that surrounds Supra Mahumapelo have got the potential to intimidate ANC members.”
