The Northern Cape Legislature has vowed to hold government departments and entities accountable for failing to deliver basic services in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District.

This, after several petitions were submitted to the legislature over a lack of water and electricity supply in the district.

Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Lesole Dichaba, says “The main thing we want to look at is to do oversight in a village called Doxan in the far lying rural area where people are complaining about services which include amongst others the roads, water and electricity.

So we went there to see for ourselves the actual nature of the problem they have and poor living conditions. Secondly, we went to the Gamagara Local Municipality where we dealt with complaints about services they are not getting.”

Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) in the Northern Cape is accused of failing to act against the new Speaker of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality who was fired in his previous post for sexual harassment.

Ikgopoleng Aiseng was elected Speaker of the municipality last month following the local government elections.

The former District Manager in the provincial Sports, Arts and Culture Department was fired from his position last year.

EFF regional chairperson and PR councillor, Phenyo Ohentswe, says the party will file a motion of no confidence in the Speaker.
