N Cape desalination plant in Kamiesberg stands idle

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a twist of irony, a desalination plant commissioned and built by the Kamiesberg Local Municipality in the Northern Cape to assist during the drought, is now standing idle because of the drought.

The plant is meant to process harsh underground water, but the levels have dropped to such an extent that the plant can’t be used.

The town of Garies has had chronic water problems for years, with water shortages sometimes lasting weeks.

The multi-million-rand desalination plant was meant to secure water for the town and surrounding areas.  Residents say repair and maintenance work is not being done.
