‘My door is always open for alliances’ – Ramphele

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele says the door is still open to enter into alliances with other political parties.

Ramphele was speaking at a media briefing at the old Women’s Prison at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg.

She says she and Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille underestimated the level of resistance within their own parties to the planned merger of their two parties.

Ramphele and Zille agreed earlier this month to field Ramphele as the DA’s Presidential Candidate.

However, the collaboration turned sour when Ramphele and other Agang SA members refused to join the DA.

Ramphele says she does not regret the attempted partnership:

“This is about the fundamental change and transformation of our politics. It’s going to be a bumpy road, and nobody said it’s never going to be easy. I have absolutely nothing to lose by continuing to try to build a country where collaborative politics will be the dominant politics because it’s only when we work together that we can build a winning South Africa together,” says Ramphele.
