The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has strongly condemned an attack on a mosque in Veralum, north of Durban, which claimed one life on Thursday.

Two other men were injured when three suspected foreign nationals attacked them inside the mosque with knives and later set fire to the mosque.

MJC President Shaykh Irafaan Abrahams says in a statement that places of worship must be protected at all cost.

He says the South African society is one of religious, cultural and ethnic tolerance which should be preserved.

Abrahams has called on the police to bring the perpetrators to book speedily.

Meanwhile, the South African Jewish Board (SAJBD) has also condemned the recent attack.

President of the SAJBD in KwaZulu Natal Jeremy Droyman says places of worship should be seen as safe places for people to worship.
