Musina Beit border surprisingly quiet

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Traffic flow and queues of people crossing into South Africa from Zimbabwe side is normal at the Musina Beit border post in Limpopo. This as some holiday makers are crossing at the port of entry after the Easter weekend. Traffic is expected to pick up later on Monday at the Beit bridge border post.

Traffic flows and queues have been normal since morning. Some of the holiday makers who have already crossed into the South African side say they did not experience any delay because there is no traffic congestion and long queues.

“There’s no queue today I’m coming from Zizane I’m going to Johannesburg. There’s no vehicles there’s no queue that side everything is going faster today I don’t know why. Because many times when I go this side is a problem.  The problem was there on Thursday when I went to Zimbabwe.”

The Musina Meter Taxi Association says it is cautious not to transport undocumented people into South Africa especially during the Easter holidays. Banele Dube of Musina Meter Taxi Association says undocumented people commit crime and it also affects documented foreigners.

“Don’t carry people around who not have passport . There’s too much crime here in South Africa because we transport people without passports they end up robbing people, killing people going back,” said.

Some street vendors at the Beit bridge border post in Musina say the Easter weekend did not make any difference in their businesses. Some of the street vendors say is business as usual.

“No improvement but is only at the standard level there’s no business now days no people no trucks no whatever so things are not good anymore. There’s nothing now days is difficult for us no more business the business is down . It is like any other days. I think people don’t have money,” said one disappointed vendor.

Meanwhile,  Home Affairs director for port of entry, Stephen Van Neel says they are anticipating the number of people crossing into South Africa at the port of entry to increase later today.

” We suspect that movement is gonna pick up people coming into the country in the morning it was very quiet we didn’t have any challenge as yet,” he said.
