Musicians including the likes of Zahara and Lira are paying tribute to the late struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela at a concert at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Madikizela-Mandela died more than a week ago at the age of 81.

On Wednesday, thousands of people attended her official memorial service at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Madikizela-Mandela will be buried in Fourways, north of Johannesburg on Saturday.

Modern pop musician, Busiswa is among those who are performing. She says she’s taking to word and music to honour Mama Winnie.

“I have realised over the past couple of days more than any other time in my life, I really am because she is … not because she was, because she is! Everything that I am, a liberated young black woman who is able to go out into the world, live my dreams and appreciate the passionate way that I can live my life. She didn’t have that chance. She was too busy fighting. She was suffering for the freedoms that I have now.”
