Music giant Mtukudzi to be laid to rest on Sunday

Zimbabwean Afro-jazz musician Oliver Mtukudzi will be buried at his rural home of Madziva near Bindura on Sunday.

Mtukudzi died on Wednesday at a Harare hospital. He was declared a national hero by President Emmerson Mnangagwa who also said that government would cover all funeral expenses.

A concert in honour Tuku is organized  by the National Arts Council at the National Sports Stadium in the capital, Harare, on Saturday afternoon.

High-profile South African musicians are expected to attend the concert.

The legendary jazz musician has been described as music giant who has made an impression in the industry.

Tributes continue to pour in from different parts of the continent. Mtukudzi died at the age of 66 in Harare.

“Tuku” as he was affectionately known is one of the most prolific musicians to come out of Southern Africa, with over 60 albums to his name.

Mtukudzi has worked with several South African artists, including Hugh Masekela and Ringo Madlingo.

Young, fellow musicians say they have lost a role model. Albert Nyathi, Macdonald Chidavaenzi and Tatendia Mahachi are among the musicians that Mtukuzi mentored.
