Political parties within the eThekwini municipality have welcomed the appointment of the new Municipal Manager Musa Mbhele. Mbhele – who was the city’s Chief Operating Officer, has been acting city Manager since July last year. The position has been vacant since Sipho Nzuza’s arrest in the R320-million tender fraud and corruption case in 2019.

EThekwini municipality Democratic Alliance caucus leader Thabani Mthethwa says Mbhele needs to stabilise the metro’s finances.

“We congratulate and welcome Mr. Musa Mbhele’s appointment as a new City Manager of eThekwini. Obviously, we do understand that there are a lot of challenges in eThekwini that he would have to attend to as a matter of urgency. One of those is the issue of infrastructure, ailing infrastructure, especially water and Sanitation, electricity infrastructure. We would expect him to prioritise the issue of financial stability of the municipality tp make sure that eThekwini residents do receive the service delivery they pay for and deserve”, says Mthethwa.

Meanwhile the Inkatha Freedom Party(IFP) in eThekwini cautioned the new city manager to work with all political parties. Mdu Nkosi is the spokesperson for the IFP in eThekwini.

“We are so happy that finally eThekwini as a metro do have a Municipal Manager after quite a long time. We are not happy as IFP as such, but we are happy for people of eThekwini because this will mean that there will be stability among the officials in the administration. What happened yesterday with all political parties agreed about the name of Mr. Musa Mbhele, was that we all hope that there will be stability but what is important is our expectation from him is to work with all the political parties”, says IFP spokesperson Mdu Nkosi.
