National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says he is pleased with the investigation into the murders at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape.

Masemola is in Alice where the ten accused in the murders of the university’s fleet manager Petrus Roats and Mboneli Vesele who was the bodyguard of Vice Chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu are appearing in the local Magistrate’s Court.

The tenth accused, Isaac Plaatjies, is the university’s head of investigations and vetting. He was arrested on Friday last week.

Masemola says the latest arrest has taken them by surprise.

“Even as police, we were working with Mr. Plaatjies to assist us, and we did not expect to see that he was involved. We were surprised that he was one of the people that we were looking for because he was close to us and assisting with the investigation.”
