Municipal leadership calls for change to narrative of local government

Reading Time: < 1 minute
Newly-elected South African Local Government Association (SALGA) President, Bheki Stofile has called on the leadership of municipalities to rise to the challenge of changing the narrative on the image and reputation of local government.
He says a game-changer in this term of office is decisive consequence management and accountability management, as the hallmark of restoring the credibility of local leadership.
Stofile says when professional and competent managers are appointed to run municipal administrations, people will notice the difference in the attitude of municipal staff.
Stofile says SALGA is also committed to providing councillors themselves with training so they are able to carry out their oversight work.

“As we said to the political parties before these elections as the association, we said what we are requesting is to at least identify people who are trainable. People who at least have a basic knowledge of what needs to happen going forward. Because we are spending a lot of money on the training of local councillors.”
