Mugabe to testify on Zim diamond corruption

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe is expected to appear before a mines and energy committee in Parliament.

The former president will be summoned to answer questions on multi-billion-dollar corruption in the diamond industry.

Mugabe was scheduled to appear before court Wednesday, but his appearance was ultimately delayed.

In 2016 Mugabe claimed that the country lost $15 billion due to corruption and foreign exploitation in the diamond sector, a statement he recently denied.

Among other things, the committee is investigating human rights violations and the joint ventures which saw many state departments mining diamonds in the area.

Piers Pigou, a senior consultant for the Southern African International Crisis Group, doubts that the former president’s presence will have much of an impact to the case.

“I don’t think he’s got much to offer, I don’t think he’s got much to say. He has already denied that he knows any real details and that figure was sort of thrown to him. Of course, the symbolism of having Mugabe brought in front of the portfolio committee will not be lost on those who saw him as being above the law for over 30 years.”
