Kataza, the much-loved baboon from Cape Town has once again made headlines after he was attacked by male baboons from the Tokai troop of baboons. The City of Cape Town relocated SK11 as they call him, amid much controversy from his troop in the Kommetjie area to Tokai on the Cape Peninsula.
It now looks like the situation and decision about Kataza’s future will end up in court.

Pictures of a bloodied and injured Kataza appeared on social media over the weekend. Since his relocation, he has been trying to integrate with the resident baboon troop in Tokai. But evidently, the male baboons from the Tokai troop are not allowing him to do so, yet.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA was called in to assist late Saturday afternoon. Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse says the SPCA brought a wildlife vet.
“SPCA was called by the public to intervene and assist with Kataza’s injuries, they brought a wildlife vet. Injuries are not too bad; they will keep monitoring. They feel the whole debacle could have been handled better regarding the decision to relocate Kataza to Tokai.”
Members of the public, activists and animal behaviourists have been keeping a close eye on Kataza.
Many doubts have been raised about the reasons for relocating Kataza into Tokai and many predictions made that he would not successfully integrate into a new troop.
Founding member of Baboon Matters Jenni Threthowan says the reasons given by the City of Cape Town for Kataza’s relocation do not make sense.
She says she predicted, with her 30-year experience, that the relocation would not work.
A court application has now been served by a local lawyer and supported by animal activists.They want the respondents namely the City of Cape Town, Cape Nature, SA Navy, SA National Parks and Human Wildlife to review Kataza’s relocation.
Kataza was seen late on Sunday morning, once again crossing busy streets and then resting on a tree, on his own.
