Mthatha Taxi peace accord crumbles

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Mthatha Taxi peace accord that was ratified over the weekend seems to have collapsed. Taxi owners took to the streets of Mthatha blocking a main arterial road through the town.

They were protesting against some of the stipulations in the accord. The use of only two ranks, one for local trips and one for long distance passengers is one of the main sticking points.

Chaos ensued when the police intervened. Commuters had to run for cover when the police initiated action to clear the road.

A heavy police presence is now maintained to monitor the volatile situation.

A large number of taxis have also been impounded.

The signing of the peace accord saw the resumption of taxi services in Mthatha after a shutdown of more than three weeks.

The shutdown was to force rival taxi organisations to make peace as taxi violence has claimed more than 60 lives over the past two years.
