Tshwane Executive Mayor Solly Msimanga says his administration will pay for the funerals and memorial services of the five children who were killed when a streetlight in Soshanguve fell on them.

Msimanga said as a caring multi-party administration, they hope their contribution will alleviate the burden on the families who are grieving the loss of their beloved children.

The children died over the weekend.

A memorial service is being held for them on Thursday. Msimanga says they will also provide counselling for the families.

“We are also now committed to ensuring that law enforcement agencies receive full support and full cooperation from the municipality in terms of assisting them to fast track the investigation in finding what happened and if there are culprits making sure they are arrested.

“The children’s death cannot be in vain and we need to work together in order to bring some kind of law and order in our society and not loose anymore lives because of vandalism. So, as a caring city we decided to carry the cost of the funeral and the memorial service.”
