Mpumalanga healthcare workers demand more security

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Trade Unions, Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa and National Health Education & Allied Workers Union in Mpumalanga say the deployment of security personnel with guns in the public hospitals is not enough for the safety of its members.

A week ago the department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison beefed up the number of security guards at all health facilities.

This after a protest by health workers at Mapulaneng hospital in Busbhuckridge when a doctor was shot and injured in the hospital’s premises.

Nehawu’s Provincial Secretary Welcome Mnisi says their members in the health sector are working in fear.

“Despite the effort made by the Department in terms of addressing the security as you highlighting, in those two institutions, but we are still saying that there are number of  challenges  which are affecting our members throughout the  entire province – so addressing few issues is like you are, dealing with the symptoms, so the position and the view of Nehawu in Mpumalanga province is to say we need to go deeper, and identify the real cause of this challenges.”
