The Department of Health in Mpumalanga is concerned that non-compliance with COVID-19 regulations could lead to rapid spread of the coronavirus.
MEC for Health in Mpumalanga, Sasekani Manzini visited the Hazyview Mall towards the Kruger National Park to monitor compliance and ensure that protocols are put in place to combat the spread of coronavirus.
She started by interacting with the management of the mall before walking from one shop to another. Some people were not wearing masks inside the mall, while others did not cover their noses.
Manzini expressed her concern after seeing that people are not complying in terms of health protocols. “Most of the people are not wearing their masks and some of them have their masks but are not wearing them properly. We have identified the hotspot in the province which is the City of Mbombela which is leading with 1 023 cases and also Emalahleni, Steve Tshwete, and Govan Mbeki. Hence we are here today at the City of Mbombela in Hazyview looking at compliance in terms of the shops also in the taxi rank.”
But the question is- are the people willing to obey the rules or she is fighting a losing battle?
“It is very hot here in Mpumalanga, that’s why some of them are walking around without masks. Some of them inside the shop, they faint especially the old people,” says one of the residents.
Another resident says, “People are not putting on their masks and I am concerned that they will die. They must always follow the protocols.”
It is not just only shoppers who do not follow the COVID-19 regulations but also some businesses as well as their staff.
Speaking on behalf of the Hazyview Mall Management, Peer Mkhonto says they are planning to come up with strategies that will force everyone to comply with the regulations.
“I am going to take this matter to our head office so that they can maybe issue fines, but first we need to issue letters to the tenants to tell them that as they are not complying we are going to come with the fine so that they can follow the rules because we can’t work without following the rules.”
