Mpumalanga aiming to clear housing backlog

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Mpumalanga is embarking on a number of initiatives to address the backlog in the allocation of RDP houses. Human Settlements MEC Speedy Mashilo revealed this during the handing over of RDP houses to child-headed households in Casteel under the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality.

Mashilo was accompanied by Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane.

The families were also provided with gardening start-ups.

Currently, the province has over 200 000 housing backlog.

The 200 houses allocated to needy families are part of a project in Bushbuckridge.

Mashilo says the department is working with other stakeholders in building houses.

“Our focus is to do the servicing of sites acquiring the land. That’s the only way we believe we can reduce the backlog. In due course, we will be delivering those sites in Nkangala. (We are) almost done in Gert Sibande. They will be starting in Ehlanzeni as well. We believe if we give people sites we believe they can build for themselves” says Speedy Mashilo, Human Settlements MEC.
