MPs in Parliament pay tribute to Chabane

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Members of the National Assembly have paid tribute to the late Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane. He has been described as a man who was humble and dedicated to his work.

Chabane is hailed for putting together the Monitoring and Evaluation unit, first established in the Presidency in 2009.

The Minister and his two bodyguards, Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence Lenstoane were killed in a crash on N1 in Limpopo. Democratic Alliance (DA’s) spokesperson on Public Service and Administration Joe McGluwa elaborates.

“ His sense of humour was therefore unmatched. He spent his first few months in the office visiting front service staff in various departments to interact with public servants on a mission to understand their challenges. During these visits he urged public servants to report corrupt activities so that they can be investigated.”

Members of the Limpopo Legislature have also paid tribute to Chabane and his protectors during its sitting in the Lebowakgomo legislative chamber.

Speaker of the Legislature, Meriam Ramadwa afforded nine MPLs the opportunity to convey messages of condolence to the three families. All speakers described Minister Chabane as a freedom fighter.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the funeral service of Chabane in his home village of Xikundu outside Malamulele in Limpopo. Chabane will be laid to rest on Saturday. The African National Congress (ANC) Vhembe region will hold its special regional council at Xikundu village also in preparation for the funeral.

A provincial memorial service for the three will be held in Polokwane on Friday. This was said by ANC Provincial Executive Committee member and member of the legislature, Lehlogonolo Masoga. Masoga was speaking outside the Polokwane Magistrate’s court where the driver whose truck collided with the minister’s vehicle appeared on Tuesday.

The truck driver, 29 year-old Amukelani Rikhotso, will be back in court on the 10th of April. He has been charged with culpable homicide, reckless driving, drunk driving, and driving an unroadworthy vehicle.
