Tanzania swears in Philip Mpango as Vice President

Tanzania’s former Finance and Planning Minister, Dr. Philip Mpango has been sworn in as the country’s new Vice President in the nation’s capital Dodoma.

He becomes Tanzania’s 14th Vice President since independence.

Mpango fills the position that was left vacant after President Samia Suluhu Hassan took over as President, following the death of John Magufuli.

Members of Parliament voted unanimously to endorse Mpango after his nomination by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

At the swearing-in ceremony, President Hassan congratulated the new vice president and made clear her reasons for picking him.

The President also used the occasion to announce minor changes to the cabinet that she says will remain largely unchanged for now.

Before becoming the vice president, Dr. Mpango played a key role in designing and executing Tanzania’s development blue-prints in the last decade.

Previously an economist with the World Bank, he was also Acting Commissioner of the Tanzania Revenue Authority and economic advisor to the late President, John Magufuli. Reporting by Isaac Lukando
